Maintaining a Devblog - is it worth it?

Hello everyone!

I’m curious if any of you maintain a devblog to generate interest in your app while you develop it. Devblogs seem to be really common in the Indie Game scene and some events like the #Screenshotsaturday or Feedback Friday (there’s also a screenshot saturday on reddit) attract a lot of people.
Or you could write some posts about monetization strategies, programming difficulties you had and how you solved it etc. to get some visitors through google. Maybe a MMWA Devblog forum section could provide some feedback to improve the apps.

I’m really thinking about starting a devblog to promote my game before it’s release, but there are some questions that hold me back

  • Do you think it is worth the effort (especially if you make lots of apps in short time)?
  • Would you be afraid that someone steals your idea?
  • What would you like to read in a devblog?
  • I would want to write in english since the audience would be much bigger than in my native language. But are spelling and grammar mistakes really forgivable? How interesting has the content to be that it is?

First of all, most of the dev bloggers i know of started to blog because they loved to , and the content was entertaining enough for users to like their products. Secondly , no app user searches for programming and marketing problems, so basically if you write about that you’ll get dev views not customer views.

Secondly if you make alot of apps, you’ll be likely to make alot of blog posts in a short amount of time. Also , it means you’ll be likely to copy/resuse whatever you code. And one bad comment in a blog is enough to warrant attention of others.

Lastly its up to know, Ive made many apps with no copy paste and maintainence time drives me up the wall sometimes. Depends on you. Create a good value first.
