I released one quite successful Wallpaper to the android market a few months ago.
At first i released a free version with a banner placed on the settings screen and a paid version (0.99$) without the banner ad.
In hindsight that idea was pretty bad
Nearly nobody clicked on the banner and i only made about 1$ a day.
I switched to Leadbolt notification ads and that’s when the money started to come in (20$ a day without a significant amount of new downloads in the last few weeks).
Regarding the paid version:
Downloads for the free version: about 800000
Downloads for the paid version: 400
I learned the lesson that the free/paid route doesn’t really help you make a significant amount of money.
My advice:
Use Leadbolt* notification ads.
I only have experience with Leadbolt. Never tried Airpush. Maybe you can find a better Notification Ad Publisher.
I would be interested in that topic also … indeed because of the lack of monetization options I had not released any live wallpaper yet, which I would like to do - many ideas about it.
And as much as I don’t like Notification Ads - they seem to be the only option to monetize a free wall paper.
It may work better, when integrating such virtual currency like tapjoy offers, so you can unlock parts of your settings for example. I think that could work
Also think about the wallpapers like screensavers on windows. There are loads of them and they all use nearly the same monetization model:
display something like “unregistered version” right on the wallpaper and truncate the available options. So users can try it and if they like it they can purchase it to get rid of the annoying text.
For screensavers that worked well many years, why not for phones also. Indeed, that does only work if people like your work - but that’s normal
Could you let us know how you insert your code when user click on the “Set Wallpaper” button, please?
I just tried your Snow live wallpaper. When press menu button on my device -> Wallpaper -> Live Wallpaper -> Snow Wallpaper -> Set Wallpaper. Then I see your disclaimer screen pop up. How did you do that?
Im kind of new here, but also have some live wallpapers on the play store. It would be cool if this thread could be updated to get some more information about your changes.
Same question as lgmcben. After 5 weeks my LWP has only 80 downloads and now is out of new apps listings. Tried many blogs and websites, had two reviews (third should come soon) but none else ever replied. Tried many different forums and none got me any noticeable increase…
