    Generally, on you animations you are changing the images' dimensions,position and alpha.Try adding more particles or image animations like the ones you are showing in the video,they look pretty interesting (i didn't saw them in the early game).Also some easing functions will make the current animations more interesting.Are you using tween engine,if not take a look here Universal Tween Engine demo .
    I think that's what made other games like this so popular.
