Why Do Most Apps Not Make Money?

There are so many apps out there that do well.
About 12% make over $50k a year, but 80% don’t even make enough to cover business expenses.
Monetization of apps is a big problem facing every developer in the market today.
There are many reasons why most apps aren’t doing well, so we will go over the reasons why and some options for developers to start making more money with apps and join that 12%.

Marketing

App Promo, a marketing firm, found these figures above and found that one of the biggest differences between the top earners, and the ones that can’t break even, is marketing.
The top 12% set aside, on average, $30k for their marketing budget and spend 14% of their time engaged in marketing.
Compare that to the 52% of unprofitable apps that spend less than $1 and 5% of their time on marketing.
Of course this is in part due to the fact that new app developers tend to not have a lot of cash available for marketing purposes, but they still have time. If they focused on content curation, social media marketing, and networking, they could have a much higher chance of success.

Market Saturation

The market has become saturated with apps. Different operating systems are trying to attract developers to make new and better apps for them, which spurs on even more apps and developers coming into the market.
There are so many to choose from that it is difficult to set your app apart.
The best way to do this is to reach out to bloggers and send them articles to publish.
This will create a buzz about your app and bring more traffic to your site. Also, be sure to not only do this in your language, but reach out to foreign bloggers as well.
The markets in Russia and China are growing fast.

Monetization

Many new app developers don’t think about monetization until after the app is built.
This is a big mistake because the app should be built around creating revenue.
There can be paid sections of the app or many special tools and add-ons that can boost a user’s experience by making an in-app purchase.
One great thing about PollToPay is that if there is anything on a developers app that can be monetized, a PollToPay survey button can be added to the app no matter what stage the app is in.

It’s Not Too Late

These three major reasons for poorly performing apps are actually a positive thing, because it is never too late to change it.
You can easily step up your marketing game, implement monetization programs, and have your app stand out.
If you are just creating an app now, make sure you aren’t falling into these traps that many others have before you.
